Ice Fishing is family fun!

ICE FISHING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

Have you never taken your family ice fishing?  If you haven't, you might want to reconsider and bring everyone out on an adventure this year. Some of my families fondest memories come on a trip we took a few years back to Lake Winnipegosis.

My son was seven and might daughter eleven when we went up with a couple of other families on perch ice fishing excursion northeast of Dauphin. The big cabin we stayed at also happened to have a hot tub, a fact my son remembers until this day. While the fishing action was nonstop, it was the time spent together as a family in the evening that made the trip so special. My son spent so much time in that hot tub that I was surprised he didn't grow gills.

Make sure you can take the young anglers to place where they can catch fish. Lake Manitoba has always been a great place, with cooperative perch keeping things interesting. . I love to fish for perch and almost any panfish, the triggering of bites sometimes a challenge but always interesting when you have electronics along.

This also keeps the young anglers interested. On a recent trip last week I had a set line rigged with a small Northland Bro Bug jig and a couple of small shiner minnows hooked through the eyes. I had borrowed the two minnow idea from Jim's friend Robert who was catching perch nonstop with this setup. On my active line I had a small 1/16 ounce Genz worm rigged with a minnow tail over the shank of the hook. Some fish were also caught on jigging spoons tipped with a bit of Berkley Gulp. What made this adventure even more fun was using the light action Berkley ice fishing rods rigged with three pound Berkley ice line. Every fish caught then put a bend in the rod and considering most of the perch caught were in the ten to twelve inch range a fun day was had. This is the kind of equipment that you want to introduce young anglers with if possible, nice light action stuff that makes catching fish so much fun. I can remember many a spectacular family day on this lake as we enjoyed the outdoors with snowmobile rides, a cook tent with fresh hot lunch and even an impromptu curling match with chunks of ice from a pressure ridge. If the snow holds off a bit, there is plenty of good ice on most of our lakes and rivers now. On Lake Manitoba there was good solid eighteen inches and on this Sunday anglers were taking advantage of it.  Permanent shacks were being pulled on the ice in advance of the holiday season and time off. What better way to spend some time with your family over the holidays than in the great outdoors!
