Schools out so lets learn to fish!

PDFPrintE-mail

Schools out for summer, which means for some of us, plans on what to do with the family over the next two months. What about teaching your youngster how to fish? This year Fish Futures and partners, in conjunction with the City of Winnipeg will once again be providing a number of camps and programs including the tremendously succesful Fish Winnipeg.  If you are interested in signing up phone the City of Winnipegs 311 number and you will be directed to the person in charge of all the fishing related programs with the city. Hurry though, almost all the programs this year are fully subscribed..

If you want to take the family out fishing but have little experience here are some pointers that will allow the young anglers to be more successful and reduce your frustration level as a parent.

  • when fighting the fish, keep your rod tip pointed up at a 45 degree angle. (This allows the rod to bend and act as a shock absorber for the line)
  • If the fish wants to take out line let it run without reeling. As the fish slows down, then start reeling again making sure not to allow any slack in the line.
  • when the fish comes close to shore or the dock, make sure not to drop your rod tip or you risk breaking the line if it takes another run

HERE ARE SOME OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • make sure the young angler has his drag set properly on the reel. It should be firm, not tight
  • have pliers and other tools nearby, ready to quickly release any fish that you don't plan on keeping
  • when you get a bite on your lure, especially fished under a slipfloat, you want to set the hook on the fish by reeling in slack and sweeping your rod up

(setting the hook is an extremely important concept with children)

Teaching them how to cast properly and accurately with good equipment (this will reduce the frustration level substantially for everyone involved)

For children younger than seven I recommend buying a spincast outfit for them. This is of the push-button variety that allows for ease of use. When the children are older then switch over to a spinning outfit. They have a bail which you open to let out line and a much more dependable than a spincast.

They also have an excellent drag system which will help if they start hooking up with larger fish. One thing you have to remember with children though is that they don't care about the size of fish, they just want action. When working with children, they come first, simple as that.
