Fish Winnipeg producing outstanding fishing

FISH WINNIPEG FUNDRAISER SET TO GO FOR AUGUST 17TH.!

Water levels on the Red and Assiniboine rivers in Winnipeg are dropping slowly, allowing organizers to finish off the final touches of the 14th Annual Fish Winnipeg Media/Corporate Challenge.August 17th in at The Forks in downtown Winnipeg.

Co Chair Don Lamont says the fishing should be spectacular this year if reports from the young anglers who are currently participating in the program are any indication. Fish Winnipeg head instructor Tyler has been putting these keen young anglers on some master Angler fish including some monster channel catfish.

LOCATIONS:  They have shore fished at Omands Creek, Bourkevale Park by St. James Collegiate, Bruce Park, and Midwinter Park.  Midwinter Park had a lot of snags but the location produced a lot of fish.

The Fish Winnipeg program is in its fourteenth year. Over that time $300,000 has been raised and the program continues to grow providing a unique opportunity for youth to experience the wonderful world of fishing. In addition, through the generous support of the Fisheries Enhancement Fund, every child that has participated in the program has received a brand new rod and reel combination as well as youth fishing book written by Manitoba award winning writer John Toone.

Winnipeg's corporate community has supported the Fish Winnipeg Media/Corporate Challenge and has helped deliver UAP youth programs and activities targeted at increasing the level of urban angling in Winnipeg. In doing so, the associated social and community benefits from providing a healthy, self-esteem building outdoor leisure activity are being realized. Gear up first workshop

The Gear Up Recycled fishng equipment program was made possible by a grant from the Fisheries Enhancement Fund. Minister Stan Struthers recently presented a cheque to program manager Frank Soja and Provincial youth angling coordinator Don Lamont to help the program expand province wide.

Historic first workshop!
On Tuesday June the 29th Rick Koss, President and Founder of Gear Up and Project Manager Frank Soja conducted the first Gear Up workshop with students from Norquay School, Boys and Girls Club in the Point Douglas area. It was a great way to end off the school year and a fitting intro for the participants to kick off National Fishing Week.
Participants received some gently recycled rods and reels as well as a new Plano tackle box. These tackle boxes were generously donated by the Manitoba Marine Dealers Association

WORKSHOP REMODELING
Soja is currently having a mural painted in the workshop area featuring a
lake scene with Manitoba fish species identified throughout the painting.
It should be completed by July 23rd. The artist is Anastasia Alexeyev a
student from Sisler High School. This remodeling was made possible by the kind donation

of Cabela's and Kathy Kennedy of 92 Citi FM at their first Gear up fundraiser May 14th.

Reporter Rob Brown from the Times Community News came down to do an article
on the workshop which will be featured in the Times on July 8th.

"Hi Frank,

The kids had a great time! They came back to club very excited to show off
their new rod and tackle box. With our fishing program and Gear Up program
providing them with rods we have taught a new skill to these youth and I
believe created a love of fishing for life!

Thank you and we are looking forward to connecting programs with you again.

Schools out so lets learn to fish!

Schools out for summer, which means for some of us, plans on what to do with the family over the next two months. What about teaching your youngster how to fish? This year Fish Futures and partners, in conjunction with the City of Winnipeg will once again be providing a number of camps and programs including the tremendously succesful Fish Winnipeg.  If you are interested in signing up phone the City of Winnipegs 311 number and you will be directed to the person in charge of all the fishing related programs with the city. Hurry though, almost all the programs this year are fully subscribed..

If you want to take the family out fishing but have little experience here are some pointers that will allow the young anglers to be more successful and reduce your frustration level as a parent.

  • when fighting the fish, keep your rod tip pointed up at a 45 degree angle. (This allows the rod to bend and act as a shock absorber for the line)
  • If the fish wants to take out line let it run without reeling. As the fish slows down, then start reeling again making sure not to allow any slack in the line.
  • when the fish comes close to shore or the dock, make sure not to drop your rod tip or you risk breaking the line if it takes another run

HERE ARE SOME OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
