Kennedy Ironstand receives his award!

img_4291_1_1

It’s a long way from the Tootinaowaziibeeng First Nation at Shortdale to the Manitoba Legislature, a drive of almost four hours. For Kennedy Ironstand it was a dream come true. Kennedy is the winner of the 2010 Youth Angling Art Competition. On Wednesday February 17th Kennedy received his first place award from the Minister of Water Stewardship Christine Melnick in her office at the Manitoba Legislature. img_4305_1

It was Erickson art teacher Kim Branconnier that encouraged Kennedy to enter the contest. Branconnier pulled Kennedy away from a school project to enter the contest. Kennedy’s mom Diane who accompanied her son at the award, says her son has been fishing since he was two but his drawing fills up much of his life with folders and folders of artwork. Kennedy is fourteen years of age. His painting will now adorn the front of 50,000 youth angling cards that will be handed out this year to anglers under sixteen years of age in Manitoba

REEL SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR COMMUNITY

REEL SOLUTIONS FOR YOUTH  COULD BE COMING TO YOUR COMMUNITY!

Hey young anglers, want to learn more about fishing? Maybe your community and school will be on the list for a visit from our "Reel Solutions for Youth " travelling  education tour. Through a grant from the Fisheries Enhancement Fund we are able to expand our program this year.

We plan on visiting various locations in Manitoba during May and June during the school year.  This would be a one day visit with a couple of hours of instruction and some fishing thrown in for good measure. At the end of the day, our participants will be able to walk home with their own fishing gear.  So if you want us to visit your community let us know!

It is now official, Kennedy Ironstand's painting entitled " The Big Chase" has been selected the winner of the 2010 Youth Angling Art Competition. Ironstands painting was chosen first by a panel of five judges from a number of entries across Manitoba.

The judges included last year's winner My Doan. Doan, who now attends J.H.Bruns Collegiate, was the inaugural winner. She along with Sisler art teacher Phil Brake were invited to the legislature to meet Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick. Kennedy Ironstand lives on the Tootinaowaziibeeng First Nation at Shortdale. Just fifteen minutes from Grandview in the Parkland region, Kennedy transferred recently from Erickson.  It was Erickson art teacher Kim Branconnier that encouraged Kennedy to enter the contest. His painting will now adorn the front of 50,000 youth angling cards that will be handed out this year to anglers under sixteen years of age in Manitoba.
